Avance III 600 Cryo

SummaryBruker Avance III 600 spectrometer with Bruker SampleCase and cryoprobe in a laboratory setting.

The Bruker Avance III Spectrometer features a 14.1 Tesla/600MHz standard bore Ultrashield Plus magnet and capacity for up to four channels: 1H/2H/13C/15N or 31P. Topspin 3.6 software is used for data acquisition and processing. This instrument is equipped with a cryoprobe for high-sensitivity biological NMR research.

Users with expertise in biological solution NMR regularly develop and implement their own pulse sequences. Users without experience with the cryoprobe can submit samples. User-submitted samples will be charged for a minimum of one hour staff time for experiment setup, in addition to the instrument time required for spectral acquisition. Additional pulse sequence development and implementation from CIF staff will be charged at the hourly staff rate.

Instrument features include:

  • 5 mm QCI-P solution cryoprobe with extended temperature range of 0-135 °C.
  • BLAXH2H500/100/150 + BLAX300 amplifiers
  • 5 mm TBI probe for room temperature solution experiments.
  • BCU-II chiller for variable temperature experiments from 0 °C to +135 °C.
  • SampleCase 24-sample changer

The AVIII 600 was acquired in 2024. The cryoprobe was acquired in 2015 and was previously installed on an AVII 600 system. Information on acknowledging funding and staff assistance for this instrument can be found on this page

The instrument is located in 1232 Hach Hall.  Enquiries should be directed to Dr. Uddhav Kanbur or Dr. Sarah Cady Phone 515-294-5975 (Hach office/NMR lab) or 515-294-5805 (Sarah office).

NOTE: Users of the AVIII600cryo MUST prepare their samples in high-quality NMR tubes when using this spectrometer. Acceptable options include the Wilmad 535-PP-7 / "Tubes, NMR, for 600 MHz 5mm" purchased from Chem Stores. Tubes of comparable or better quality may also be used - please don't hesitate to ask. There should be a marking etched/printed near the top of the tube that has the tube part number. If the tube says "economy" DO NOT USE IT FOR THIS SPECTROMETER. Suspension of instrument access privileges or charges levied on the researcher / PI for cleaning or repair of the cryoprobe can result from using cheap, high-throughput, or economy tubes. The recommended tubes are more expensive, but they can last a long time if they are properly cared for. Purchasing a high-quality NMR tube (~$24) is always going to be SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than having to pay for a probe repair (likely upwards of $10-15k).
