Sample Submission and Forms

Instructions for Sample Submission

Samples can be submitted to the mass spec lab (room 1238, Hach Hall) anytime between 9 am and 6 pm, Monday through Friday. We intend to use these until they are gone.

  • Samples are to be submitted in screw cap vials with Teflon septa to avoid any contamination.
  • For solids the amount needed for EI or CI experiments is usually less than a ug. Similarly, less than a microgram of "pure" compound is needed for analysis on the QTOF by loop injection (ESI or APCI ionization). If submitting "pure" compounds in solution, be sure to state the concentration, the solvent the sample is dissolved in, and other solvents that could be used for dilution purposes and /or to ensure miscibility.
  • For GC/MS requests, submit 0.2 - 1.0 ml with a concentration of about 50 ng/ul per significant component of interest. Always state the estimated concentration, the solvent the sample is dissolved in, and other solvents that could be used for dilution purposes. A GC trace is strongly preferred.  NOTE: Rarely do staff perform GCMS measurements for students.  You are expected to receive training and run your own samples.
  • For LC - ESI and other special experiments, please consult with the mass spec personnel. An LC trace is strongly preferred when requesting LC/MS measurements.

Samples can be submitted directly to mass spec personnel.
