Crystal Growth and Mounting
The X-ray laboratory does not provide facilities for single crystal growth,
however, advice, hints, and encouragement will be provided if asked.
The single crystal growth is a crucial and most important step as the quality
of the crystal is the main limitation on a X-ray structure
determination routine. It has to be mentioned that only a single crystal or some
kinds of twins can be used for obtaining molecular and crystal structure. There
are tons of literature regarding single crystal growth procedures. A very simple
and useful hints can be obtained on a web site of Dr. Paul
Boyle on the North
Carolina State University X-ray Laboratory .
The staff of the laboratory will mount crystals for data collection under the
guidelines found in
Sample Submission and Data Collection.
The laboratory has a number of different types of sample mounts for bulk
powders Sample mounts for limited amount of sample are also available.
The recording of thin film spectra can be done with prior arrangement for the
mounting of the thin film attachment for the Scintag upon request.
