ACS Ames Local Section Mass Spectrometry Workshop
Ames local ACS section in conjunction with the department mass
spectrometry lab, is organizing a mass spectrometry workshop for
undergraduate students. Graduate students and faculty members are invited
as well. The goal of this workshop is to give to students a concrete idea
about how the mass spectrum is obtained. Two mass spectrometers will be
used: KRATOS MS50 and FINNIGAN TSQ700. Gas chromatography and capillary
electrophoresis will be among the topics covered. Contact Kamel at
(515)2945544 to sign up for this workshop which will held probably the
second half of February.
Prior to the lab sessions, a one hour class will be given. Following this,
the participants will form groups of four.
workshop topics:
-Electron Impact (EI) with direct sample introduction and gas chromatography.
-Chemical Ionization (CI) positive and negative ion modes.
-Fast Atom Bombardment (FAB): molecular weight determination of polar compounds.
-Electrospray ionization (ESI): high molecular weight protein analysis.
-Capillary Electrophoresis/Mass Spectrometry for protein analysis.
-High Performance Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry analysis of proteins.
-Quantitation of Caffeine in popular sodas by HPLC/API/MS.
